The heartbeat pills that make me dead all day, can make me happy to be awake. -So begins a song titled Colorcast Demo by the Impossibles.
It was a transition period for them, so the song was published as Color Cast by Slow Reader, the follow up band.
It is a sad beginning to a very beautiful song. To me it is a song about life’s duality, the constant blend, balance, and swing between positive and negative that we go through in the moment or across time.
Embracing life’s duality is key to self-care, joy, happiness, and self-actualization.
We all know you enjoy a good hard drink. We might categorize alcohol as drugs and we will in this post.
In this post our goal is to review 4 great components to the good life.
There is a reason travel is not on this list. Travel itself is not key to the good life, it is what we get from travel that is key to the good life. This is a really important point. Keep it in mind.
Too many people think of travel as the end in a means-end relationship. They have the means and travel is the end. No.
Travel is the means and the end is unknown. The end is what you make of that travel experience. Travel is not about the pictures, despite what those instagram posts might make you feel.
Interestingly enough, the four great elements of the good life identify key conversation topics one engages in while traveling.
If you are one of those people who avoids these conversation topics, you are missing out. They have so much to offer to your personal growth.
Music moves you. The physical expression of music occurs as your body dances about to the rhythms and beats. Be free!
Let yourself feel the music.
No culture has a “type” of music because everybody is different and they have different tastes and styles. Social groups have types of music. A lot of people have multiple types of musics they enjoy.
Listening to a diverse variety of musics helps you listen for the qualities that people embrace and it helps you gain a better understanding of those people.
When we think about hip hop, we often default to the big business model of hip hop. You know, the kind that promotes luxury purchases, women that conform to the patriarchy, and extreme adherence to patriarchal authority in a way that almost seems like by being so extreme it is attempting to use patriarchy to overcome racism.
But hip hop is so much more than that inaccurate stereotype. P.S. all stereotypes of lies because they simplify the complex and debase the person following the stereotype. Think about that for a moment.
Hip hop is a beautiful type of music. It hides brilliance in plain sight, it is clever, it is poetry in motion, applied to beats, and has its own dance styles. Those dance styles come in such a variety.
Think about country music. It too has lots of variety and is not all reducible to whiny men crying about women, beer, trucks, and nationalism.
Country music is actually a diverse genre with a solid foundation in politics. Check out the following song, its from a sub-genre of country music. This particular song has several varieties with different numbers inserted, because this is how folk songs work.
It was the Carter family that were responsible for a standardization of music. Carter father went about collecting songs, which was a great move historically speaking. The unfortunate effect, in the scheme of social life, was that country music as we know it today emerged.
Today’s country music that is played on the radio is filled with tired, boring, stereotypes of country people. Country people are so much better than those stereotypes.
Country and hip hop share this foundation in hip hop. Isn’t that interesting?
Music is so much more than a genre. It is a way of communing with people. Sharing in a moment, accepting one another.
By communing over music, you are celebrating one another. You are accepting differences as you share in a moment.
So get out there and find some music. It does not matter what kind. One of the joys of traveling is encountering cultures that might celebrate with group dances or talent show style singing or collective folk songs sun in unison or something altogether different and unanticipated. Explore it all, it is all worth knowing about and makes your life richer.
In the United States, people are taught not to talk about politics. Because it is not acceptable to talk about politics, people also rarely think about politics.
Politics in the United States is unfortunately about which color you align with (blue or red). People do not think too hard about politics. They cling to micro-ideas that seem like they align with their values, but in the scheme of things often do not. Moreover, people are emotionally manipulated into reacting a certain way based on supposed values they hold.
Politics in the American’s mind are disconnected from a sense of national pride or citizenship. Politics is individualized. By individualizing politics, meaning across difference is erased and discussions of politics turn into shouting matches. Not a very effective way to run an organization… or country.
One of the teams (team red) bases authority on none other than the authority of identity. Ironically team red also mocks identity politics.
The other team (team blue) says it bases authority on merit as something one earns through a combination of education and experience. But that is a lie.
As you see, I subscribe to neither of these so-called political positions. I call bullshit. Turns out I am actually an individual. I am an individual who recognizes that I am not the only person on the planet and that my actions impact others too. I think for myself while also considering other people.
A political perspective like mine should not be as novel or mind blowing as it is in the United States. That is one reason I created this website and blog. I want to push people to think outside the box or rules that have been given to them. I want them to consider other ways of doing things and thinking about the world. I think makes the world a better place and in my experience, it does. Thank you to all the people I have met in my life’s journey!
Moving on in this discussion of politics. Let us reflect on an inter-cultural exchange that occurs in an information sharing meeting at factory in Ohio. The factory has Chinese workers and American workers. The Chinese workers are brought to the U.S. to work in the factory but are exempted from U.S. labor laws. The American workers are desperate after losing their unionized auto jobs, so they are compliant with the norms being established by the new factory owners in town.
In this film, the Chinese businessman is leading a meeting where he was trying to teach the Chinese workers about American culture. He remarked that Americans are not theoretical and do not think critically. I thought this was a profound insight. The businessman was informing the workers a couple things. One was a covert attempt to stymy any attempt at unionization and advocacy of workers rights. The more obvious was providing cultural information about Americans that would keep the Chinese workers safe. If they talked about politics, it could trigger the Americans. And we all know what happens when Americans get triggered (mass shootings happen).
I inserted some fascitiousness into that paragraph. What I want to communicate is that people who do not think about why things are the way they are (aka do not think critically or theoretically) are not inclined to advocate for their rights as citizens. When American culture tells people they are individuals, they are eliminating the consideration of other explanations and critical thinking.
As a consequence of these conditions, people in the United States are unable to string ideas together logically and it plays out terribly in politics. Don’t be that person. Learn about how society works so you have a better idea about how the world works, because the United States is not the beginning and end of the story. Not when it comes to freedom and not when it comes to capitalism and not when it comes to democracy. These all come in a variety of flavors, taste the rainbow.
Check out these two vendors to read up on politics and political subject matters that help you be a better citizen:
- Chelsea Green Publishing – This publisher has great books. Check out the new publication (from August 2020) called Oneness versus the 1%: Shattering Illusions, Seeding Freedom. Ironically, the title of the book mirrors our mission here at Hangover Throat!
- Audiobooksnow.com – Is a great place to find audiobooks for all your accessability, travel, and exercise needs. Just listen to a book! Bonus: they have a 50% starter package so you can be sure this is a service that meets your needs.
Sex, what a fun topic. Americans hate talking about sex and sexuality. Yet at the same time they LOVE talking about sex and sexuality.
Sex is a source of pleasure. Self-pleasure, partnered pleasure, group pleasure. You do you!
Unfortunately, too many of us are raised in homes where we do not learn about sex. I am talking about sex as a physical act. Oral sex, anal sex, vaginal sex are discussed clinically in terms of reproduction only.
People do not learn about sexual techniques and they certainly do not discuss pleasure. But it is super important to your self-identity, actualization, and freedom to explore yourself and explore with a partner (more two).
Another thing we learn is that sex is for relationships. Yeah, no it is not. Sex can be great in a relationship, but it can be great just to experience some pleasure when you want it.
Knowing what you want from a relationship and knowing what you want from sex.
In a relationship, you can write down the qualities of your ideal partner. You should absolutely do this. Then if you are in a relationship, see how many of those qualities your partner has.
Explore polyamory as a relationship style. Polyamory if you do not know, is a relationship style where you recognize not everyone can meet all of your social, emotional, or sexual needs. Love is infinite and only grows when adding more people. Of course, this also makes life more complex!
Polyamory isn’t really a relationship style to me so much as a sexuality. It is a sexual orientation. There is much to be learned from polyamory and not just the practice of it. Learn about it. Learn about polyamory. The joys and challenges are many. The challenges polyamorous people face are similar to those monogamous people face. That is why I make the suggestion to learn about it.
Knowing what you want from sex requires exploring what you enjoy and don’t enjoy sexually. Maybe you like a little tongue in the ass, maybe you cannot get over the fact that it yucks you out. Maybe you enjoy nipple play, maybe you don’t.
There is a great deal to be written about sex. My suggestion is to explore with toys. And always use lubes. Lubes should be appropriately paired with your toy. Silicone lube should not be used with silicone toys, it will ruin them (and possibly cause you issues).
Check out these two online vendors:
- Vibrators.com – This is an online retailer that divides their products by type and style including “quiet” as a category. Sometimes toys can be rather loud.
- JetSet Sex Toys – This website has affordable sex toys, but not a great deal of information about them. If you have medical conditions, this might not be a good choice. If you are looking for a one and done use product, this could work for you. Only you know what is best for you.
Drugs. Who has not had a great time while on drugs? For our purposes I include alcohol under the banner of drugs.
Drugs include the legal variety as prescribed by a doctor and the illegal variety. Drugs include your aspirin, birth control, and insulin alongside your marijuana, cocaine, and mushrooms.
Many people do not know this. The drugs that are illegal today were actually used as everyday and medicinal drugs in the past.
Coca-cola, do you know where the “coca” in coca-cola comes from? It comes from coca, the plant used to make cocaine. Cocaine used to be in coca-cola. Coca-cola company still maintains the exclusive rights to import coca product into the United States.
In an Atlantic article on drugs in everyday use and medicine, the author writes about how wine was blended with cocaine. This concoction was “a most wonderful invigorator of sexual organs“. Sex and drugs. Classic.
When it comes to drugs, you want to make sure you are using them for the right reasons. For enjoyment and pleasure. Drugs enhance your experiences. They make life better.
But drugs alone are not what makes things better. That is escapism and it is toxic. There is a time and a place for escapism, and it is not everyday of your life. Hangover Throat is here for you, if you need help let us know and we will do our best to set you up with the resources you need. Maybe what you need is to join us on one of our amazing adventures abroad to learn about the world and yourself.
Drugs are powerful. They can inhibit you or enhance you. We hope you are using them for enhancements, like make-up but more fun.
Maybe you are familiar with the provision of hard drugs to kids and at an affordable 15 cents for immediate relief!
I find this all highly amusing. It goes to show that drugs are not all that bad. People survived. Sure, some did become addicts.
It was probably a bit misguided to be using all these drugs as though they were all well and fine for you body. But hey, thats money honey. If the goal is to create profits, having addicted customers is an on point business strategy. Just ask Facebook and Instagram and Google and… any social media company. When did you last check your phone? When will you check it again? Don’t tell me drugs are the problem!
But have you ever read about how addiction works? It really has little to do with the drugs most of the time. Most of the time is has to do with strong social bonds with friends and family.
Sex, drugs, politics, and music. Any combination of these four elements is sure to bring you joy and happiness. Too much of a good thing is rarely good for the soul. We want your soul to feel full of joy and happiness.
Sit around listening to political music and talk about sex and drugs. Go to a festival to enjoy some music, use some drugs, talk politics, and let the dancing lead to sex.
These four points of joy and love are great conversation topics because there is a lot to be said.
